If you are serious about creating a successful online business and making money
online there is a lot of opportunity out there but you do need to think about
your strategy before you leap into it.

The first question to ask yourself is do you have the temperament to succeed in
the online home business world? Are you disciplined enough to work from home? Do
you have good boundaries around work and home? Do you need the structure and
stability of a more traditional job? Are you comfortable handling risk? How
good are you at managing your time?

Choosing what type of online home business you create is critical. I suggest
that you choose a field that not only you feel passionate about but also one
that matches your unique strengths, gifts and talents. For example, I love to
sing but I can't say that I feel that I am terribly gifted at it. So if I
created a singing career, I probably would fall flat on my face.

After you identify three to five areas that you feel passionately about and that
you are really good at, select some keywords that you feel people would use to
find online business sites. Look at the top ten or so sites and as you view
them, ask yourself what is the site set up like (blog or ecommerce) what do you
like or dislike about the site; how is the site making money (advertising,
affiliate programs, product sales) and what would you do differently if you
owned that site. You can learn a lot about the areas you are targeting by
reviewing sites operated by other people in those fields. A good overview of

Once you have narrowed down the type of online home business that you want to
create, look over the sites in that field again and focus on how they are set up
and designed. Look over as many web sites in your area of interest as you can
and write down ones that you like. The more sites you review the sharper you
will get about navigation and what works. Go to your local book store and look

Learn how to write text for the web. Writing sales copy for the web is very
different than writing an article. On the web, people scan more than they read

Often people do not order thing the first time they visit your site so often the goal of most web pages is to capture a person's email address. You need some way to encourage people to sign up on your site and a system to automate this process for you. The signup for your email distribution list usually should be prominently displayed or highlighted on the home page and a signup form for it should be on every page of your site and preferably in the same spot. The company I use for newsletter lists - aweber - is pretty much the industry leader although there may be a better one out there now. If you choose aweber as your newsletter list, it is easier to compose messages in aweber directly rather than cutting and pasting documents from Word. It is 2010 and if you are going to invest the time and energy to create a successful online home business, pay the fifty bucks and get a professional photograph taken for your site. I feel that this is especially important if you are selling products or services. I had a friend once that created a beautiful site but had a very unprofessional image and I feel certain that she lost a lot of potential business due to the inappropriate image for the site. What is appropriate or not would vary by business.
